Understanding mediation

A process that leaves the decisions with you.

Mediation provides structure for a conversation. A neutral facilitator helps participants identify issues, exchange information, consider options, and work toward mutually acceptable decisions. The facilitator does not impose an outcome.

You do not need to choose separation to learn about mediation. Relationship education, counseling, legal advice, and mediation serve different purposes. Understanding those roles can help you choose a useful next step.

Keep in mind

  • Participation must be voluntary and informed.
  • Each person can ask questions and seek independent advice.
  • An inquiry from one person does not mean the other has agreed.

What would you like to understand before choosing a next step?
